'It Hasn't Happened To Me': Managing the Risk of Insider Threats

Clock icon 1 minutes reading time

It’s far too often the case that organisations consider an Insider Threat security incident to be unlikely simply because they believe ‘it hasn’t happened here before’. Even if that were true (it’s probably not, you don’t know what you don’t know), there’s no ignoring that the operational, financial, legal, reputational and potentially life-threatening impacts would be significant if an insider with authorised access to facilities, systems and information went rogue.

Warren Buffett famously stated that it's only when the tide goes out that you discover who's been swimming naked, and this sums up the challenge posed by the Insider Threat very well. It’s good to see that the strategic defence review (SDR) underlines the importance of identifying, managing and reducing Insider Risk, confirming that ‘robust counter-intelligence capabilities are critical for countering … threats and for reassuring the UK’s allies and partners that it is serious about protecting their equities. The MOD must create a single counter-intelligence unit that brings together Defence expertise and specialist capabilities …[to conduct]… investigations into human and cyber espionage and ‘insider threat’ activity. This would ensure resources are focused on protecting the most critical Defence capabilities, at home and overseas, against the most serious threats.’

Offering the full spectrum of Insider Threat services, CDS DS has many years of experience and continues to deliver and support a complex, large-scale Insider Threat programme for the UK MOD. This service is available to government and commercial clients and can be scaled to meet your needs.
