Since 2017, CDS Defence & Security (CDS DS) and Made 2 Measure Mentoring (M2M2) have been providing accreditation for specialist instructor courses for the British Army, from Award Level 3 to Level 7. Each year, the two companies award the title of Learner of the Year to an individual who has excelled in their training journey. In 2020, that honour went to Corporal Lucy Weedall.
Corporal Lucy Weedall attended the Defence Train the Trainer (DTTT) course in February 2019 and completed the mandated Level 3 Award in Education & Training. Part of the DTTT includes an option to complete additional elective qualifications; The Level 3 Award in Effective Coaching or the Level 3 Certificate in Effective Coaching and Mentoring. Corporal Weedall took on the more challenging Certificate which had, at that point, not been completed by any of our candidates.
After gaining some experience as a Section Commander, Lucy returned on the Army Trainer Mentor Course in August 2020. Completing the Level 3 Award in Assurance of Vocationally Related Assessment during the 5 day course, Corporal Weedall also registered her interest in the Level 5 Certificate in Executive Coaching and Mentoring. Most candidates who complete this qualification take 8-12 months but, to her credit, Corporal Weedall completed the qualification to a very high standard in just 4 months. For this incredible performance and a fantastic attitude towards lifelong learning, Lucy Weedall was awarded the ATC Trainer of the Year Award. She received a £200 Amazon voucher and an etched glass trophy.
Lucy said of the training
“Overall, I have had a positive experience with M2M2 and CDS Security & Defence. I have gained 4 civilian qualifications that I would not have been able to complete otherwise. I now have the knowledge and skills to work effectively as an Army trainer and Mentor. I would encourage my peers to take every opportunity that is given to them, when its free and easily accessible. The time it takes to do it will be rewarded with a civilian qualification, which may well give you something to use when you choose to leave the service. The support of CDS DS and M2M2 is outstanding and there will always be someone there to help you if you struggle, they won't let you fail”

“What Lucy has achieved is staggering. Not only the first to complete the Level 3 Certificate in Effective Coaching and Mentoring, but the quickest completion of the Level 5 Certificate in Effective Coaching and Mentoring in our 3-year contract. Lucy is an outstanding example of what is possible if soldiers invest in their own lifelong learner journey”
