A Year of Change: Trauma-Informed Practice for the Home Office

Clock icon 2 minutes reading time

We’re proud to have recently completed a transformative, year-long project to design, build, and deliver a Trauma-Informed Practice (TIP) across the entire Home Office asylum operations.

Developed from the ground up, this highly personalised learning programme is not only aimed at raising TIP awareness across the entirety of asylum operations but is structured to delve deep into the skills practitioners need to use TIP principles throughout their roles. The ultimate goal is to empower leaders to foster a culture shift toward TIP across all levels.

Creating personas for this training was no easy task – asylum operations span a wide range of roles and locations, with each individual working under immense pressure due to the nature of the work and the lasting impact it has on other people's lives.

For this reason, throughout the learning, we embedded the voices of people with lived experience to ensure the programme had maximum impact. Additionally, we created a 13-minute animation that highlighted the impact of trauma and how TIP can make a difference. Overall, the project totalled around 10 hours of eLearning, video content and audio clips.

This collaborative journey brought together the expertise and dedication of the Home Office team, Hedroc, and CDS DS, alongside partners like Revealing Reality, Barnardo’s, and Migrant Help.

Piloted to nearly 400 people, the feedback has been phenomenal. Over 90% of participants rated the training as 'highly engaging' and agreed that they could see the utility of it in their role, with many also committing to making a positive change in the way they work.

As we wrap up this phase, we’re filled with pride and gratitude. A heartfelt thanks to Christian FitzHugh, Claire Arnold, and Muhammad Armed, who have been invaluable from day one, helping us to understand the world they work in and the importance of this mission.

Together, we’ve created a foundation for meaningful change, and we’re confident that with the continued dedication of the team, this programme will truly make a difference.
