Driving Cultural Change: Delivering Trauma-Informed Practice Across Home Office Asylum Operations

As we approach Security & Policing 2025, we’re proud to highlight a groundbreaking initiative that is shaping the future of Trauma-Informed Practice (TIP) in the UK’s public sector.

Originally designed as a bespoke TIP learning programme for part of the UK Home Office asylum operations, the success of the pilot has led to a full-scale roll-out across the entire service—impacting over 8,000 people. Now, the programme is being trialled across the Probation Service, with a full roll-out anticipated for a further 22,000 professionals.

This programme is more than just training—it’s cultural transformation in action. It equips frontline practitioners and leaders with the practical skills to apply TIP principles in high-pressure environments, ensuring safer, more compassionate interactions with those affected by trauma.

Our approach was shaped by case studies and insights from leaders in TIP training and practice:
  • Hampshire Police Constabulary’s Violence Reduction Unit (VRU) – Pioneers in embedding TIP into policing, helping officers recognise trauma responses and build trust with vulnerable individuals.
  • NES Scotland’s National Trauma Training Programme – A leading model in TIP education, providing evidence-based training for professionals across health, social care, and justice sectors.
  • Lived Experience Contributions – Individuals with direct experience of trauma and the asylum process played a key role in shaping the programme, ensuring authenticity and emotional resonance.

Key Programme Highlights:

  •  Immersive Learning – Over 10 hours of eLearning, engaging videos, and a 13-minute animation illustrating the effects of trauma and impact of TIP.
  • Proven Impact – Piloted with nearly 400 participants in the Stoke Decision Making Unit, with 94% rating it as highly engaging and applicable to their roles.
  • Nationwide Reach – Now supporting 8,000+ staff in asylum operations, with trials underway for up to 22,000+ professionals in Probation Services.
  • Cross-Sector Collaboration – Developed with Home Office, Hedroc, CDS DS, West Midlands VRU, NES Scotland, and key partners Revealing Reality, Barnardo’s, and Migrant Help.

At Security & Policing 2025, we’re looking forward to sharing insights on how trauma-informed approaches can transform security, policing, and public sector training. If you’re attending, let’s connect and discuss how our approach to TIP can enhance your organisation.
